- Signature Program is a Windows utility that lets you create and insert
- signatures into documents. For the program to be most effective, it should
- be network-installed and distributed to individual workstations. You can
- then create individual passwords, and design your own digital signatures.
- During individual installation, Signature Program insinuates itself into
- Windows so that it will be invoked whenever an application is used. Create
- a signature bitmap using Windows Paint or scan your signature in. Signature
- Program is activated only when you receive a document, or send one. You
- can verify the identity of a sender by double-clicking on the documentÆs
- signature. If the signature matches the verified password on the LAN,
- the recipient sees a report of who signed the document and the time. Add
- your signature for verification and approval. If a document has been
- virtually forged, the program will display æinvalidÆ on the screen. On
- an individual machine, Signature ProgramÆs usefulness is limited. However,
- it can be used to create a digital version of oneÆs signature, which will
- appear on the document when it is printed. Note that this type of
- authentication is a security step that is effective only if the signed
- document remains electronic. In other words, if the document ever gets
- printed out, then one might as well just sign it with a regular old ball
- point.
